History of Air India Express

Air India Express was founded in 2005 as a low-cost subsidiary of Air India to meet the rising demand for economical international travel, particularly among Indian expats in the Gulf region.

First Flight: On April 29, 2005, the airline's inaugural flight from Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) to Abu Dhabi marked the start of its short-haul international operations.

Air India Express was founded primarily to service Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian destinations, with a concentration on Kerala and other southern Indian cities with substantial populations of overseas workers.

Since 2022, Air India Express has been a part of the Tata Group's aviation ecosystem, with ambitions for fleet expansion, digital transformation, and improved customer experience.

Merger with AIX Connect: Following the privatisation of Air India, the Tata Group began combining its aviation subsidiaries. Air India Express is in the midst of merging with AIX Connect (previously AirAsia India) to form a new, stronger low-cost carrier under the Air India brand.
